The metal spinning process start from a square metal sheet and then cut in a circle. This metal blank is pressed against a mold by means of a lathe and with special tools such as rollers, deform the metal until it takes the form of the mold, producing round parts.
This type of process is ideal when you have a deep draw parts and its volume does not justify the high cost of a press die. You can also make special geometries through several molds or steps of the part.
In this process you can form parts that are round, conical, hemispherical, cylindrical, parabolic, venturi, flange type plates, or any round geometry.

Cedinor has 13 hand spinning equipment and are being run by more than 17 qualified personal, trained in house; six state of the art CNC metal spinning machines, one semi-automatic equipment and one NC machine refurbish in house. One of our CNC spinning machine has double roller, this allow us to have better finish on your parts and work faster.
Our largest hand spun machine can spin up to 90” in diameter with a maximum thickness in aluminum of 0.125”.
Some of our CNC equipment has manufacturing 4.0 technology. Our CNCs are equipped with pressure control so the flow forming is perfectly control.
On the CNC machines we can work blanks up to 60” in diameter that can spun up to:
- 275” thick aluminum
- 197” thick cold roll steel
- 118” thick stainless steel
Metal spinning is a flexible, yet exacting method of production. Be sure to identify critical points for tolerances, don´t just give overall dimension on the drawing.
Generally, the tolerance that can be held directly effects the cost of the part. Tolerances of ±0 0.030” (0.76mm) are normal for most sizes, diameters and materials.
Specify an ID if Possible. It is best to specify an inside diameter (ID) tolerance for your spun parts. If an outside diameter (OD) tolerance is given, material thin out of up to 25% would be typical.
Material thickness. The thickness of the sidewall and bottom of a spun part will vary, normally up to 25 percent. The bottom of the part stays at the thickness of the original blank since this is where spun starts. The sidewall thins depending on the pressure and speed of forming.
If uniform wall thickness is critical, be sure it is specified. Secondary machining may be necessary in some cases. If you need a specific thickness of dimension on part of a sidewall, do not specify it on the whole part.
Corner Radii. Avoid sharp corners when possible. Generally, a formed radius should be specified as not less than 2 to 3 times material thickness are possible, especially on thicker materials. Secondary machining can sharpen a radius if necessary.
Be sure to evaluate the cost vs. tolerance when comparing manufacturing processes. For example, deep drawing may be capable of a tighter tolerance, but the tooling cost is much higher. If you do not need too tight tolerance, specially for shorter runs, metal spinning can save you money.
